Loved ones who have passed on to the other side are always trying to get us to notice they are still with us, or to communicate with us in any way they can. One of the perhaps most unusual sounding, but yet, a very common sign, is spirits will leave pennies in the path of one they love, just trying to make them pay attention to the unusualness of those pennies showing up in odd places throughout their day. I see this quite often.
A client once asked me, “Do spirits leave pennies around, and if they do, and I am not crazy, can you please tell me who is leaving them around me?” My answer drew us into a conversation about how, yes, spirits do leave pennies around, and the spirit who came through for me as leaving them often for her was her grandfather. He also brought with him a smell each time he left them, and just at the mention of that to her, before I could get it out, she jumped in and spoke for me, “His pipe tobacco. That’s how I knew it was him. I just needed confirmation it is actually him!” That mere validation brought such a beautiful feeling of excitement within her. It is truly hard for me to find the words to describe the beauty of the emotion that validation brings.
Both she and her mother were clients, and in her excitement, she could not wait to tell her mother that it was indeed her grandfather, and she was not going crazy! Time after time, just before the penny was noticed, she kept asking her mother, “Don’t you smell Papa’s pipe?. Her mother had jokingly said to her a couple of times, “I don’t ever smell a thing! I think you’re going crazy!”
They decided later that evening to collect the pennies from her grandfather. They labeled a quart jar, “Pennies From Heaven”, and sat it on the counter. Each day, they added pennies to the jar until the jar was full. After that, they started another, and laughed daily as they added to it, and openly spoke to him and acknowledged his presence there with them.
After a couple months had passed, I got a telephone call from her, and she was a little upset. The second jar never filled, and she wanted to know why he had stopped visiting her.
It wasn’t that he had stopped visiting. She had been going through some very trying times, and her grandfather had been around her a lot offering his strength and comfort, and doing his best to let her know he was there for her. Now that she was better, he just wasn’t making himself known as often. I told her to continue to talk to him and know that he is around, and she will find that he will still let her know he has popped in from time to time to visit.
After many years, we still talk, and each time we do, she always has more to share about the recent visits from her grandfather. He still continues to let her know he is with her.

Hi Beth,
Many thanks for this website!! I’d just like to share a penny story with you – seeing your article brought an incredulous smile as I have never before seen a reference to spirits leaving pennies – and immediately remembered this story:
It was the Summer of 2010 and lets just say that I’d been beautifully thrown into the beginning of a huge spiritual learning curve for me. A wonderful lady, a close friend whom I had just met had bestowed upon me the wisdom: “Give back to the universe; say Thank You every day”.
One day shortly afterwards I was driving back from my parents’ home, filled with the beauty and miracle of the universe. On the road home, I saw that a woman had stopped the car by the side of the road, and was holding a baby in her arms. I made the instant decision to pull over and stop to ask if she was OK. I walked over to her from my car, asked if she needed help – and she said that she was just fine, that the baby had been crying so she had stopped to comfort her. She thanked me for stopping. When I walked back to my car – right on the ground before the car was a little yellow rubber duck. I smiled and picked it up, feeling sure I was supposed to (that duck still sits in my bathroom today).
I then went straight to the supermarket, to do some grocery shopping. I finished my shop, paid by cash and was given a penny in change. On leaving the supermarket doors, for some reason I remembered the saying “find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck”, and remembered to “give back to the universe” … so, I decided to drop my penny on the ground to leave it there for another soul to find and receive some luck that day. I got into my car and drove the couple of minutes around the corner to get home. I stopped the car in the usual place in front of our home and opened the door to get out. I gasped!! Lying on the ground before my eyes, right at my feet, glinting in the sunlight was a penny!!
Thank you for sharing your story Hannah!
Hello brilliant website you have got above
I am currently staying in the house of my recently widowed feuture father in law so my fiancée and I can save up money. I have my own room. This morning while reaching for a basket on the top shelf of my closet where I keep undergarments I heard coins sliding around. I looked inside (loose change is a pet peave of mine) I found along with the coins a silver cross charm. I’ve never seen it before. I have no idea where it came from and feel like my fiancées late mother may have left it for me. What do you think?
Hello,
So four years ago this summer, we rented a house on the ocean in Marshfield, MA for a week. My sister freaked out when we first arrived because there was a picture of two old ladies hanging in her room and she thought it was creepy so she hid it in a closet. I took a room with a splendid view of the ocean and plenty of old furniture. The house was pretty old looking. I don’t know if this will matter to the story but, at the time, I was fourteen going on fifteen that September.
When I first arrived in the house, my room was empty. I know this for certain. We left the house to go out to dinner and I came back and there was a small pile of pennies on my bed–all 1993 (my birthyear). I picked them up and put them away because, at the time, I didn’t think anything of it. However, when I left my room and came back, there were more pennies. As the week went on, everytime we left the house, I’d arrive home to pennies in an increasing number of places in my room and every time, every SINGLE penny, was 1993. It got even weirder when I took a shower, and when I came out there was a stack of 1993 pennies on the sink–and I know they weren’t there before I got into the shower because I’d brushed my teeth at the sink before getting in. I thought it was weird, cool, and kind of unusual, but I didn’t really think too much of it at the time because I was 14 and on vacation.. Now, I feel like I missed some sort of message or opportunity. I’ve only ever heard of spirits leaving objects for loved ones though–so this is really confusing. It seems that a spirit left me, a total stranger, pennies with my exact birthyear in a house that we rented for just a week. Which just seems too weird…
Insights???
I found your site after googling Penny stories..I work inside a prison where no coins are allowed- I was standing in front of a file cabinet filling out 3×4 cards to pull medical record charts for my clients when I heard a noise on the floor beside me- I looked down and saw a penny hit the floor head’s up! Shiny copper one..there was a co-worker there who heard it as well. She stated, “Pennies from heaven”…when I got home from work I was telling my husband the story and went in to shut the heater that he had on during the day. I took the lid off and low and behold..there was another penny! Head’s up as well…My son in the meantime had sent me a text message asking me for the name of the cemetary his father was buried in — I believe these pennies were a sign from his father who passed away in 2000 who is missed dearly.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful story! It was indeed a message from him to the both of you!
