There is a Reason You Are Empathic

A Gift or a Curse?

Being empathic can at times feel like a curse before one reaches complete awareness of the gift and begins to futher develop it. Empaths constantly absorb energies and emotions from others around them, which can be totally exhausting in a day, especially on those days in which the empath may find themselves surrounded by negativity. Before there is better awareness, one with the natural gift of empathy may struggle to understand themselves, as well as cope with all the emotion.

I have often been asked how to turn off this ability. In all honesty the gift cannot be turned off. You have it for an important reason. You can try to block, or numb it through other means, but blocking or numbing only causes negativity within us, which manifests in physical illness. It is best to learn to work with it, and use it.

I, too, once felt cursed by this blessed gift. I now see it for what it truly is. It is a beautiful gift and a beautiful responsibility.

Many empaths spend years wondering why their feellings and emotions are all over the charts before they come to fully realize they are absorbing emotion from others. Still, there are those who seem to be in tune with this gift early in life through natural meditation, or perhaps a bit later in life when they add meditation to their daily routine. Whatever the case, this can be one of the hardest spiritual gifts to come to terms with and ultimately learn to use for positive good.

Learning to better navigate and utilize the gift of empathy largely requires becoming aware through your own introspection and observation. In order to detatch from emotion, you must become one with it. Become very observant of your emotions and changes. Your thoughts actually cause your emotions. If you are suddenly feeling emotion that is not attached to your own thought, then you are not actually feeling your own emotion. When you know emotion did not come from you, then set to identify where it came from. Accept it as just emotion, or a message, if you will. Acknowledge it, and release it.

It is important that you surround yourself in the positive. It may not be possible to completely remove ourselves from anything negative, but we can control which environments and people we allow ourselves to spend the most time in and around.

The Journey of the Empath

Although many empaths may be aware that they absorb emotions and energies constantly, the one aspect of the gift that seems to come with later understanding, is, they also have the ability to project emotions and energies.

Whenever one is empathic, one or more creative gifts will be present along with the gift of empathy such as writing, art, music, a highly scientific mind, or other creative talents. Empaths may also find themselves in fields where they motivate mass amount of people such as in motivational speaking. A well developed, and very aware empath, will most often navigate towards being involved in some sort healing endeavor, along side using their creative gifts, having learned to become a conduit for projecting healing energy to assist others in healing emotionally, as well as physically.

Creative gifts always accompany the gift of empathy for two important reasons. One being an avenue to releasing those emotions and energies that are constantly taken in, and two being an avenue through self healing to project emotion and energy, which helps massive amounts of people throughout the world, and helps raise the vibration levels of our world when used positively. When creative gifts are used, the result is natural meditation.

What goes in, comes out. If you are am empath struggling with coping, be very aware of what you allow to become part of your energy field. Also remember, it is from within that we create our lives around us. Don’t ignore emotion of your own that needs to be examined, healed, and released. It is often through our own journey of healing we are most able to help others.

  2. Actually, you can block empathic feelings using mental shields (also known as psychic shields) – but you’re right, in the long run, you need to learn how to live with empathy, because shielding from things will only weaken you more and more.

Learning control over your emotions is probably the best way to deal with this ability. And once a person knows how to control it, it becomes a benefit, not a curse.

    Great post Beth!

I think this is a wonderful thing to read. I agree to be a empath is a true gift. I have never saw it as a curse but maybe a little irritating. Only because I have always wanted to a nurse but … as I have got older I cant handle seeing, hearing, even thinking someone or something is or might be in physical pain! I know it sounds weird but put it this way for example : If you brake your arm it will hurt my arm more than it hurts you ! Honestly i cant seem to get over it even when the person says it doesn’t hurt i just cant even handle being around or thinking about about them it actually causes me pain! I still have no idea what it is or means but i would love to know!
